Opinion: Kenyans abroad shouldn’t be allowed to plunge this country into darkness

Posted by Administrator on January 22, 2012

Many columnists are used to receiving vitriolic email messages from people who do not like what they have written, but the one I received a few days ago was particularly disturbing.

A Kenyan (who might also be a US citizen) going by the Internet name “Nick Hagono”, who I believe lives in Pennsylvania, USA, sent me a message that should concern the National Commission on Cohesion and Integration.

He was irritated by my column two weeks ago where I talked about the parallels between the current anti-Kikuyu debate and the 1980s’ “Asian Question”.

In the email message, he called for an Idi Amin-style expulsion of Asians from Kenya, calling me a “filthy brown mutt”, a “stupid chooti” and a “curry-munching twat” and suggested that I “pack up and move to Somalia”.

(If this constitutes hate speech, then Nick could face criminal charges in Kenya under the new Constitution. And why he wants me to go to Somalia, I have no clue.)

This is not the first time I have been racially attacked by Kenyans in the diaspora. For some reason, they find it easier to be racist, perhaps because they live in racist societies.

I believe that one of the reasons Kenyans – and non-white communities in general – living in the West are prone to be more racist than Kenyans living at home is because they have probably been victims of racism themselves.

Unable to retaliate against their provocateurs, they lash out at innocent third-parties, like the badly-treated employee who goes home and beats his wife. It is a form of displaced aggression.

Besides, they don’t live in their home country and do not have to bear the consequences of their hate-mongering.

They have nothing to lose – if ethnic violence breaks out here, they will not die or be displaced.

They will watch Kenya burning from afar, from the comfort of their adopted homes in far-off lands.

But it is not just the racism amongst Kenyans abroad that is most worrying, but the negative ethnicity that borders on fascism.

An example is a listserv posting by the US-based columnist and academic John Mulaa at the height of the post-election violence in 2008.

Mulaa did not hesitate to state that Kenyans should support “an armed struggle leading to eventual partition of the country”.

In reference to Kikuyus, he said: “We cannot forget or forgive what these guys have done. There is no guarantee they will not repeat it. It is in their DNA.”

This from a man who holds a doctorate in public policy!

During the 2007/8 violence, I received many such email messages from Kenyans in the diaspora.

Some of their wrath – not just against me but against entire ethnic groups in Kenya – has been captured by Prof Kimani Njogu in a chapter titled “Globalised Identity: Diaspora Kenyans and Local Conflict” published in 2010 in the book (Re)Membering Kenya: Identity, Culture and Freedom.

Prof Njogu believes that Kenyans in the diaspora are prone to negative ethnicity because “when moving from the homeland to a foreign state, citizens do not delete their cultural solidarities and tensions; rather, they ‘suspend’ them momentarily and retain traces which can be activated during moments of anxiety, fear and crisis” (for example, during an election).

Kenyans abroad exhibit a number of traits, he says, including a conscious decision to maintain a collective identity as Kenyans or members of particular ethnic groups.

They have also developed relations of solidarity with co-ethnic members in other host countries.

And because they are not fully accepted by their host countries, they are prone to feelings of alienation, exclusion and the occasional superiority complex vis-à-vis their compatriots at home.

Kenyans in the diaspora are potentially a dangerous lot. If Nick and his hate-filled, xenophobic ilk are going to have voting rights in the next General Election, then we are in deep trouble as a nation.

This is not to say that there are no voices of reason in the diaspora.

Indeed, some of the most vocal Kenyan proponents of tolerance live outside this country.

But they could be overwhelmed by the voices of intolerance which threaten to plunge the country into what the late Martin Luther King called “the dark abyss of annihilation”.

They must be stopped before it is too late.

The writer of this piece is guilty of the same thing he is complaining about. Putting “ALL” kenyans in the diaspora as one. His title should be “Some Kenyans” not “Kenyans”!

    • Bemused said

Cut the writer some slack! She did not lump “ALL” Kenyans in the Diaspora in one group….She said, “This is not to say that there are no voices of reason in the diaspora. Indeed, some of the most vocal Kenyan proponents of tolerance live outside this country”

The problem (nasty comments and views) is not just confined to Kenya it is a worldwide phenom. While the internet has contributed to us coming together it is also veiled in anonymity which opens the floodgates of opinions that at times border on hate speech.

  3. Wiseman Ole Melelek said

i do agree that the writer seem to have lost it completely, can you do more research , given that your opinion about Kenyans in Diaspora is not fair , take time to gather facts not your personal unreasonable bias way of thinking.
Please also remember when writing something like this avoid using a certain tribe for God-sake we Kenyans need to be as one people , united . also considering that this election year, Please don’t try to divide Kenyans . i believe we are better that this.
    Peace ,Love , Unity.

And so your solution is to stop us from voting. Voting is basically a matter of contribution/representation. Ma’am, do not walk into the kitchen if you can not handle the smoke. You are a column write and hence open to responses. Roll with it. Singling our respondents and throwing brickbats at a whole group does not make you any better.

Kenyans abroad are a true rep. of any society. We have the good, bad and ugly. Coming abroad did not make them angels or demons. Violence in Kenya means our investments go to waste too, therefore do not simply limit it to bodily harm. D’u think that is what we are over-nighting for?

If anything, your attacks should be directed at our news reporters. They have a knack of sensationalizing issues (no balanced reporting) and that is our nearest source information. I recall calling home in 2007 worried to death, only for my father to tell me all is well. He advised me not to believe the newspapers. Now Imagine calling home after reading a poorly researched report and you can not find your loved ones.

We have enough problems getting anything accurately from relatives to the government we fund. Even our own reps. abroad think they are doing as a favor. What you see is a reflection of the lousy performance of Kenya at home.

the writer needs to get real and swallow the bitter pill of guilt and move on. He should understand , writing to public is opening your life to anything and no one is exempt from critisism nor bad feed backs sounding like attacks. So the writer needs to get real and or refrain from writing….

The writer is a SHE not HE to begin with and she has gone through the problem of racism as well in America as She once wrote about it and i think She has faced other forms of in equality, segregation, and has been in the hands of a patriachy race that is indian who are themselves living in Diaspora in kenya since 100 years, have been racist to Kenyans and are a product of some of the races the colonialists British uplifted and made them believe that they are a better Race than the other black races they found in Kenya.so i don’t Know if Rasna Warah is afraid that We Living in diaspora will sensitize our Black brothers and sisters to Wake up and say No to the on going mis use and abuse of the Black race from other other ” whiter” races China ,India ,europeans etc…who use us for everything cheap and Dirty for dumpin prices or She has a genuine concern that really the diasporians are really dangerous lot or what …
What i Know is we in Diaspora have Seen and experienced lots and we don’t feel good when we find races like indians still Hiding their own fresh from india in their secret and not intergreted societies since 6 generations, with Indians who cannot ever utter One kiswahili word taking Jobs from kenyans…knowing too well despite the fact that we have these kenyan Indians in kenya, they don’t welcome us in India in friendlyness only further racism during our studies there..so rasna tumeina mengi sana…its time kenyans plus indian kenyans worked together..we are not longer the ignorant fools !

I am a Kenyan living abroad and I Fully support what Rasnah has commented about, while most of us left Kenya as economical and political Refugees and care about our country, I am afraid that majority of this community are truly very ignorant people who have nothing to offer the larger Kenyan, they are a disaster not only to themselves but to kenyan society.

I admire Our Kenyan People and what they go through everyday making Kenya a better place to Live in, while others like us are slaving to our white masters. What can Ngugi or Mazrui offer the people of kenya at Large??? If the top class scholars are just useless drunkards what about these primary level and O-level dropouts!!
I would have a different opinion for my people abrade if they lived as Kenyans, But shockingly if you wanna tribalism No. 1, Classes, family and any thought that divides then its is a Broad, I always wonder if kiks were so victimized by moi in Kenya, who is victimizing them now abroad… where they are full of it!

Kiptoo you should Be ashamed of urself callin the kenyans who remit so much cash monthly to Kenya nation ” just std 8 dropouts and Form 4 leavers” you seem just like those so called university jobless graduates livin in kenya,to have the ” big man sydrome” suffered by many african losers…
To start with i think we need to start respectin every job and every tribe etc if we have to Move on,rasna warah did not Call her own fellow indians in the 60,s anything although they came to kenya and practiced segregation and racism so know what ur sayin before u make à fool of urself

      • gachungwa said

“big man sydrome” suffered by many african losers… ”
This must endear you very much to the “so called university jobless graduates livin in kenya”

-all this nonsense of remitting cash, dollars, pounds, dinars is sickening! where do you remit the cash to? to the public coffers or is it to your private and personal bank or investment acct?
by the way how much does the diaspora contribute to to the KRA? or for that matter you as Njoki? remitting your personal income/ wealth back home is just that, itz not public wealth.
I fully concur and understand Kiptoos opinion, the disporans suck and there as so many of them that just coz they are out of the country tend to think they are king solomon

      • Gathoni said

        Gachungwa Numbers dont lie
remitances from the diaspora is the No2 contributor of KEnyas GDP if not No1 in the last few months.

Rasnah, you should direct your compalin to the indidvidual whom you have problems with and stop laying us all in the diaspora on the chopping board. If you feel that you are being harassed by some individual just go after them. I am in the diaspora and when you write carelessly a general accusation I take it that you are falsely accusing me na kwa hivyo unanichokosa. If you feel unsafe in what you are doing then try something else, go to a different field where you can be safe.

    @ Rasna,

As a columnist/blogger if you trully have the best interest of Kenya as a whole Why don’t you invite those who differ in opinion to discuss the differences rather than be like them and engage in the same name calling you are accusing them of.. Asking or promoting for anyones voice and opinions to be stopped is ridiculous and will not solve anything. those who have platforms like yours should promote holding open conversations especially with those who question and challenge the status quo. Lets move the conversation to the NEXT Chapter

    ps
*voting is a right of every kenyan plain and simple.
    * this whole divide and conqure mentality has to GO. Creating a wedge between the diaspora and kenyans at home will stall and derail progress we could use from working together as a whole, puting to work resources and talent each group has to offer.

    • Njoki said

Gachugwa…wacha wivu, you Know i noticed the pple Living at home don’t realise that we Living in Diaspora are Living in very structured societies which work on time and Long Term planning and in most cases that does not match with our Friends ,relas, and the restl who see us spending much money during the holidays at One go And they don’t realise we saves that all year Round to use it in 4 or 6 weeks time our resting time allows us then we go back to chop…
On the other side our Kenyan culture is partying every day so the two structured don’t Match at all And thats Why we will always make them angry when they see us Living à well planned life learned from our respective countries we live in..
Another Thing is when a kenyan has a higher Education say University ,they believe they can Never ever do any Manuel work which is the point to be observed …on the hand you find in Diaspora choppin Jobs And Making Progress than the stuck up university graduates livin jobless or hv low paying Jobs !! Now tell me surely where would a nation with such high joblessness tell pple in Diaspora to Pack their bags And head home not unless something is really wrong in their heads…! That Money we bring creates lots of jobs when its circulating around, think of that fundi building our houses …mama mboga where our families waste our hard earned cash (!read stealing from Diasporaians on crazy monday standard ,yesterday paper ) ect..our Money really circulates so revisit Ur Economic class gachungwa And u wil Know that we are of use hata kama we dropped from Standard 8….

Kiptoo, speak for yourself. You are more ignorant than Rasnah. Read Economics 101. U will wake up. For Rasnah, don’t display your ignorance in public. I am a Kenyan living in Diaspora. I am well read and very well informed of the Kenyan affairs. For you to indict all Kenyans in Diaspora is synonymous to me believing that all Indians are crooks. I have reason to believe that you are Asian. In that case you have no idea identifying with the struggle a Kenyan in Diaspora has endured. I have lived among the Kenyan Asians and I know how most of them have milked the economy of Kenya. Pattni is a good example. If I had the power, I would have had him executed on a firing line.
Are you among the Asians that left Kenya soon after Independence? Kenyans in Diaspora are playing an important role in nation building. I believe you, Rasnah, bank your money in UK. Don’t patronize me. Are you more Kenyan than me?

  12. sam said

Kiptoo and the writer have some good arguments. The rest are just proving how ignorant they are. The writer started a debate but of course the diasporans have being challenged and result to insults. I have always believed that Kenya will be changed by Kenyans living in Kenya! If you want to change kenya, back your bags and head home. Your dollars are not helping us in anyway. you are just enriching yourselves and not paying taxes! Also, some of you guys have denied and surrendered your kenyan citizenship. You had to say some nasty stuff about your country in order to get that new passport; this is directed to mostly assylum seekers!. Kiptoo also mentioned luck of educated diaspora population. Many are living so badly that they should just pack and head home……Kenya is awesome. wacheni kupanguza mavi na kutuma dollars kwenu kununua shamba then you say ati you are building kenya! Thanks self enrichment; very different from enriching your country. The only way to enrich your country is to acquire and education then come home and use it for the betterment of the KENYAN society. I thought mambo ya class iliishia kenya…..wait till you see kenyans abroad!

    • Njoki said

Now Look at another dumb ignorant kenyan Living at home saying kenyans here in diaspora don’t pay taxes ! Surely you Must be some of those People who have only seen the one sided world and u don’t Even Know how other goverments are Run apart from your corrupt kenya Full of illegal Indians and others afraid to loses their high and mightly status if the normal Kenyan wakes up and join hands with us.Sam we pay taxes and there nothing wrong with wiping mavi as u Call it..its a job like any other…kenya stagnates in growth cos everyone wants to be a boss! Watu amkeni mfanye kazi na bidii and u stop letting these asians to use you ,if your learned as you want to make us believe …THEN industrialise that country And stop letting asians do it for u,use those brains you want to make us believe you have..do it…And as for us packing our bags and coming home, let that not worry you so much…our money which is taxed here in the countries we live must first and foremost finish those projects we started,we educated half of our relatives children to University Level at the same Time educating our own here …then we make holidays there now And then and we finally retire Home …in the mean time wakenya wetu Show us what you got and build railways, more roads, and teach the lazy ones writing those proposals to beg Money from the West to work like us around the clock…only that will save Kenya…tuungane mkono watu wetu..

    • gachungwa said

Sam, you are a very intelligent man, that is one of the major reason I miss kenya, Intelligence at itz best .
wale hawakupata education ya kenya wakasomea hapa cannt jenga kenya in anyway with their multiple choice type schooling which lack critical thinking.
Sam, dont let these villagers who see Nairobi enroute to the JKIA with banana leaves on hired buses and the whole village escorting them intimidate you, they are incapable of competing back home! that is why they result to insults instead of engaging higher upstairs.

I joined these debate not coz Rasnah is 100% right of what she said but coz she targeted the Kenyans Living in USA and I tend to state with no apologies; I have the same, YES the same same opinion with her about the community! I dont associate and cant share a table with the majority of these people,. .. si unasikia ata dallas wako na makanisa mia moja. the infighting, kuuzana, gossip fornication yaani upuzi yao ilinishida

If anyone is making any sense here apart from Rasnah, gachungwa & Sam, Please proof me wrong and put down how many orphanages, schools, scholarships, projects that the diaspora can enjoin their name unto.

Be serious guys if we really mean business Let us each contribute $5.00 only ( if not more) and Resettle all those Idps (Mr Jambo can organize this hapa hapa) instead of singing remitting money back home… kwani ukituma pesa kwa mamako inaenda kwa IDPs? itz Like we are sending the money as donations to the populace ( poor kenya!) Kwani akili zenu simekuwa frozen na madoubles!

Rasanah kama ni mhindi, mzungu, mnigeria, mchina I dont give a damn/ anakaa kenya, ako na makaratasi ya kenya as a kenyan has every right t as a kenyan to share her opinion/knowledge with the kenyan community, how she migrated to kenya or settled is totally irrelevant and stupid…its the same song we here in us of birthers.

      • nyasgwa said

u cant just heap your blames on all kenyans in the diaspora. do u also read international news? do u read or at the least hear the exchanges between republicans and democrats in America yet they are still free to vote??? Do not take someone,s only tool away. let them be.

why do kenyans like begging? at we put up schools, dig boreholes to prove our intelligence my foot ! not every kenya lives these kind of life you state here in Diaspora, many got education and live a very good life and your writing shows how ignorant you are trying to group up with a muidi you dont even know…

Do you know these chutes still have clubs, you gachungwa and your sam, if he is black, you cannot be allowed inside..ha ha lol..

yes i went to meet a friend in one of them(gymkhana ) and them black watchies told me as a black person i cannot enter, and he only knows 4 black people who can enter there. .i just pitied him to have been brainwashed by these so called indians you try telling us here are Kenyans, and by the way, can you tell you Rasna to write about racism in Kenya by Indians and try to fight for the poor blacks, on how they used like toilet paper by indians in their own country??
maybe she should have written it a long time ago or called you and sam to demonstrate peacefully, you are Kenyans after all !!

  13. sam said

@ Njoki….state facts……..and ma’am avoid name calling…..those are true characters of an ignorant person; which i hope you are not. Yes you pay taxes to your govt but your remittances do not add any value to KRA. Keep supporting the IRS my dear. I have lived abroad for over 20 years in 10 different countries and i am talking facts. Asians are not the only ones working hard here. Kenyans too are doing amazing businesses here. Asians and even Kenyans ( from the diaspora and others who never left) recognized an opportunity just like jews in the US. The key is recognizing an opportunity and getting down to work on it. The chinese are a good example. They went to many countries and went back home to BUILD their countries. I like your plan of retiring back home. I sincerely Wish you the very best on that. FYI….everyone has a brain and an idea. We are all like a flower bud………closed but when we open up something beautiful is produced and impacts lives in a major way. Every time you fail brings you one inch closer to a major break through! Another thing….there are many Asians who are pure kenyans…..ni rangi tu! Oh! How i hate the race issue.

    • Njoki said

Sam i hate the Race issue as much as you and i even hate more kenyans living in Kenya ignorantly talking about diasporians like we are Children who came from one house, brought up with the same oppotunities, doing the same thing here in diaspora thinking the same and behaving in identically when at home.We run lots of bussinesses too while still working in diaspora and we have siezed many oppotunities…but we cannot have a Rasna warah Coming to Call us a dangerous lot like we don’t belong to our Country She should let our relationships between the ones who live here and ones Left there develop in a harmonious way with writing some undertones to try and divide us like the colonialists did, everyone i believe has a role to play in our nation Building And what we need is a dialogue and tell each other the truth..my Truth is wakenya fanyeni kazi kama waindi so that you stop inviting all sorts of Nation even to construct you a toilet…

As an administrator you need to be very careful with what you write and post. Also we need to learn how to remove logs in our eyes before we point out specs in other people’s eyes. I may say your article from 2 weeks ago was tribal, very divisive and had all potential to evoke ethnic hatred among Kenyans. The most honorable thing you need to do is to write another column apologizing to Kenyans for the article you penned. On another note just be sure to go through some articles before posting because you are responsible for any article on your site and ignorance is no defense.

this whole annoying behaviour of foreigners feeling like they are special is nothing new and in these coming age most people are well travelled and have lived with these people who are white red or green in colour in their own countries and have learned who they are and the inferiority complex that the kenyans had or some still have can be experienced in so many places and i would love to know why Rasna was called a curry munching twat by the blogger she is telling us to be wearly of…
it was only these blogger or other few bloggers who she differed with and that is NOT a reason for her to write an alarming article asking Kenyans to be denied their voting rights just because of one blogger..
There must be more to these, when Gachungwa says that Kenyans are taken to the airport with relas with banana leaves on top of hired matatus, does she really know all Kenyans living abroad, do kenyans in kenya think that everyone lives the same lifestyle here in Diaspora ? now that does not make you so clever as you are trying to sound, that,s generalization of the highest order and its has been seen also here in Europe by the the whites who are racists thinking that all Africans sell drugs or sell themselves or they are not eductaed and that is the biggest reason for conflicts in these world just lumping people in one basket and assuming…Rasna watch your pen and next time try and solve your problem with the bloggers you differ with…you have no right to say that Kenya in Diaspora should be denied their rights you have yours too..

Did you read the artcle and understand this article or you just went blue because of the word “diaspora” and their shortcomings?
True to Rasnah the Diaspora in particular this guys proves she is right, what an Ignorant Lot…..

I have read and re-read Rasnahs article and I see no justification for all the hostility being expressed here.
For those of us who went to school when we did literature with books like Things Fall apart and Devil on the Cross, we are able to digest Rasnahs article and differ or second it, which I totally do without exhibiting the level of ignorance which has been exposed here! we Learnt to be object to subjective to irrelevance.

as Gachungwa says Ranah being indian, wariah, jamaican, japanese is irrelevant it is her article which should be discussed.
I am yet to see a Mihindi in Hague or Ethnic cleansing done by anyone apart from we ourselves, we are our worst enemies and always tend to pass the buck to someone else. Moi, Okemo, Gichuru, Jirongo to name a few aren’t wahindis or foreigners.

Kenyatta was no angel but no mhindi or any foreiner for that would have ever dared leave alone shouted an African down during his Reign, so dont blame wahindis blame the people who chose the so called leaders and that is why the Diaspora with their myopic self glorifying wannabe little white men homos and lesbians should be allowed to influence their slavery mentality into Kenya System- If you of Kenya denounced Kenyans citizenship STAY out wherever you are and vote there. ….

Back to Rasnah where she received hate mails by what by being pro kiks? at this rime of heightened tensions due to the coming general elections— Here are her Statements and I need someone with no cognitive dissonance to show what is racial tribal or dangerous in these statements
—-“I talked about the parallels between the current anti-Kikuyu debate and the 1980s’ “Asian Question”. “—she is pro kik?
—-“I believe that one of the reasons Kenyans – and non-white communities in general – living in the West are prone to be more racist than Kenyans living at home is because they have probably been victims of racism themselves.”‘– she stated no white ie anyone who isnt from the Ku Klux Klan!!
—-“Mulaa did not hesitate to state that Kenyans should support “an armed struggle leading to eventual partition of the country”.

In reference to Kikuyus, he said: “We cannot forget or forgive what these guys have done. There is no guarantee they will not repeat it. It is in their DNA.””………I missed it, is Mulaa a mhindi?

—–“Some of their wrath – not just against me but against entire ethnic groups in Kenya – has been captured by Prof Kimani Njogu in a chapter titled “Globalised Identity: Diaspora Kenyans and Local Conflict” published in 2010 in the book (Re)Membering Kenya: Identity, Culture and Freedom.
Prof Njogu believes that Kenyans in the diaspora are prone to negative ethnicity because “when moving from the homeland to a foreign state, citizens do not delete their cultural solidarities and tensions; rather, they ‘suspend’ them momentarily and retain traces which can be activated during moments of anxiety, fear and crisis” (for example, during an election).”
———————— Here she quotes Prof. Njogu; is the Good Old Prof. a mhindi?

After Rasnah beats the dog showing its own vomit she concludes,=
“This is not to say that there are no voices of reason in the diaspora.
Indeed, some of the most vocal Kenyan proponents of tolerance live outside this country. ”

Kudos To Rasnah, I had to cut and paste your article so the Diaspora knuckleheads can review it.
I am among those on the other side and Hope this words from Henri will encourage to write more articles which hits the nail on the Head.

Kama ulinyimwa visa, don’t be a sour loser. Are IDPs our responsibility as Diaspora Kenyans? You don’t want us to vote but want our dollars? Geez, what arrogance?

You Kenyans in Kenya caused the mess that is IDPs, why should we change? Don’t you have a functioning govt?

Acheni upus. Rasna can quit writing if the heat is too much instead of being a whino.
